Update on I-94 Expansion

The Alliance Board of Directors voted unanimously to support the proposed expansion of I-94 through western Waukesha County, a 12.5-mile stretch from County Highway SS to the county line. We recognize the expansion is a top regional priority for workforce access, economic development, and long-term competitiveness.

Why This Matters:
The I-94 corridor between Milwaukee and Madison is one of Wisconsin’s most vital economic arteries. Growth in Oconomowoc, Summit, and surrounding communities continues to accelerate, while this part of the corridor faces serious congestion and crash rates up to seven times the state average. With more than 75,000 vehicles using this segment daily and thousands commuting between Waukesha, Jefferson, and Milwaukee Counties, the need for investment is clear and urgent.

Coalition Building:
The Waukesha County Business Alliance is leading a growing coalition of regional partners, including ThriveED in Jefferson County, to advocate for the project. Coalition members are supporting the effort through letters of support and continued legislative outreach to demonstrate strong business and community alignment.

Update from Madison:
The Joint Finance Committee (JFC) was scheduled to take up the transportation budget last Friday, but did not do so. We continue to monitor the process closely. Senator Julian Bradley has introduced a budget motion to formally enumerate the I-94 expansion project, and the Alliance has submitted letters of support to Senator Bradley as well as JFC Co-Chairs Born and Marklein. We are also coordinating closely with County Executive Farrow’s office to maintain momentum behind this effort.
