Construction/Skilled Trades

The Alliance’s construction/skilled trades collaborative is focused on raising the perception of the available career pathway opportunities within the industry and creating interest in pursing the trades as a viable option. Like many other industries, construction is facing a workforce shortage that is projected to increase in the coming years. In a survey conducted in 2017 by the Alliance, 87% of construction/skilled trade companies indicated having difficulty attracting and/or retaining employees.

For 2018, the committee will focus their efforts on the following:

  1. Support area K-12 school districts and post-secondary institutions in their efforts to implement and/or expand construction/skilled trade programs
  2. Connect construction/skilled trade businesses to nontraditional sources of employees

By partnering with area high schools, the construction/skilled trades collaborative works to engage students, parents and educators to learn more about career pathways, salaries and options available in the skilled trades. Annually, the construction/skilled trades collaborative participates in the Alliance’s MADE Career Fair, which brings 800 high school students to learn about career paths in the manufacturing, construction, engineering and automotive industries.

By: Mike Cady, PhD, superintendent of the Pewaukee School District. Over the past year the Pewaukee School District (PSD) has been able to successfully implement Academic Career Planning (ACP) practices with our students at the middle and high school levels.

Full Integration

By: Reginald Reed, CEO, Mindful Staffing. Everyone seems to be struggling to find good employees for long-term corporate and economic growth, and with projects like Foxconn already underway, it’s only going to get worse.

Inspiring Waukesha County Students

By: Susan Koehn, Director, Talent Initiatives, Milwaukee7. As southeast Wisconsin continues to grow, talent is needed to drive economic growth. Today, workers are in short supply to replace retiring baby boomers and fill new jobs created, even using modest economic forecasts. Employers at the forefront of competition for scarce talent are asking for help getting in front of young people and their influencers earlier, while career decisions are being made.

Second round information sessions announced for Foxconn construction work

The second round of information sessions for Foxconn construction work will take place at the end of July and early August. These information sessions are a way to connect construction-related businesses and workers in all regions of the state with the tools they need to get connected with the Foxconn project.
