The Wisconsin Athletic Club is ranked #2 as the Largest Milwaukee-area fitness center The Business Journal's Book of Lists.
The Wisconsin Athletic Club is the largest and most respected privately owned athletic club in Wisconsin. Founded, and in continuous operation since 1976, the WAC now has six club locations in West Allis, Waukesha, Greenfield, Wauwatosa, Downtown and the North Shore. The Wisconsin Athletic Club has had numerous awards and were recently recognized for the following: "Best Gym in Milwaukee" as WISN A-List Winner, #1 Ranked Raquetball by IHRSA, and a 2006 Best Places in Milwaukee by M Magazine, to name a few.
The first Wisconsin Athletic Club facility opened in 1976, was called “The Racquetball Club,” and was located where the current West Allis Club now operates. As the name suggests, the original Club had racquetball courts (8 of them) and nothing more. In 1978, the Waukesha location was added and the clubs became award-winning racquetball/handball destinations boasting the top league programs in the nation. As the fitness needs of our members evolved, the WAC added weight equipment, swimming pools, and group fitness areas and expanded our social areas. We came to be known as Milwaukee’s finest “social and fitness club.”
As fitness trends expanded and evolved, so did our clubs. In 1998, we changed our name to “Wisconsin Athletic Club” and began the process of adding locations (currently 6) that best reflect the needs and changes of today’s population.
Nationally, our founders were part of the original group that created IHRSA, which is currently the world-wide organization of clubs that virtually every fitness facility recognizes as essential to join in order to be fully knowledgeable in our industry. Our clubs are part of IHRSA, the International Health and Racquet Sportsclub Association, made up of over 8,000 high-quality athletic clubs worldwide. WAC is proud to have been one of the original founders of IHRSA in 1980. IHRSA promotes the concept of high-quality, ethical club standards with primary focus on member services, retention, and integrity. Through annual conventions, seminars and their monthly magazine, Club Business International (CBI), IHRSA informs and educates member clubs as to the latest management and operational techniques in the club industry.
The owners of the Wisconsin Athletic Club have been deeply involved in IHRSA’s development over the years, including presenting at international conventions, service on the IHRSA Board of Directors and as IHRSA President in 1984-85.
The WAC has a history of both local and national recognition. The WAC has received awards for programming across all club operations. The national awards have come from IHRSA and Club Industry. Some local recognition has come from the A-List (WISN-TV) and The Best of Milwaukee (Shepherd Express) to name a few.
In Milwaukee, the WAC is involved with over 200 corporate affiliations and community groups providing fitness services. From the design of corporate fitness centers (Stark Investments, Artisan Funds, Northwestern Mutual, and Johnson Controls Inc.), additional on-site services (Kohl’s, Goodwill, Hays Companies, West Allis Central High School), the implementation of 12-week lifestyle change programs such as the Living Well Program with Aurora Health Care (WEA Trust), to programming special events (Boys & Girls Club Triathlon), the WAC has the experience to enhance the your employees’ fitness experience.
Although there have been many changes and additions to our company, certain core values have remained constant. Following our mission statement has allowed us to remain leaders in the industry, both in Wisconsin and in the nation.
