  • Have you ever wondered what it takes to start a bank? Here’s what can happen when you follow your dreams.

We founded our bank by following our dream. The opportunity to continue to grow and build on that dream came together in the vibrant community of Elm Grove. The Elm Grove location on Bluemound Road gives us a base to serve the financial needs of many communities, including Brookfield, Waukesha, New Berlin, Sussex and Wauwatosa.

“We thrive in locations with tight-knit communities,” said Joe Fazio, CEO of Commerce State Bank. “We found a great location. The next challenge was to build a strong team with local ties.”

    The Team

The team went beyond any of our expectations. Everyone on the team has vast banking experience, and all are from Milwaukee and Waukesha counties. While the new branch building was being prepared as quickly as possible, the team displayed its resourcefulness by meeting clients at their businesses. The initial office was truly mobile as our bankers literally worked out of their cars.

“We focus on the client experience,” said Joshua Yamat, Market President of the new branch. “The value of relationships is very important to us, so Commerce State Bank’s belief in ‘Earning Relationships’ really hits home with everyone on our team.”

    Hitting the Ground Running

Our enthusiastic and experienced team has brought early returns at our new location and a great opportunity for growth in these communities. The market has embraced Commerce State Bank as much as we love the area.

Business banking is a particular strength of this team, and a vital part of Commerce State Bank’s history… and future. Thank you for welcoming us into your community. Please let us know how we can serve you with an Earning Relationship.

Business Spotlight: Commerce State Bank knows its way around business growth

    By John Basil

(This article originally appeared in BrookfieldNOW)

Commerce State Bank's rates on such financial products as CDs, savings accounts and loans are competitive with those of area banks and credit unions, according to its chief executive officer, chairman and co-founder. Where the Elm Grove bank particularly stands out, he says, are in its client business-brainstorming sessions and networking events.

'Anyone can give you a great rate,' said Joe Fazio, 'but we provide the opportunity for our clients and shareholders to talk about their business strategies and growth plans. We also host an annual Christmas party, economic and topical business seminars, and periodic get-togethers at Brewers games and Lake Front Brewery. If promoting them amongst each other results in more business opportunities, it's great for them and for Commerce State Bank.'

With three expansions — the most recent coming earlier this summer with the Elm Grove bank — since opening its first branch in West Bend in 2005, Commerce is well versed in counseling its small and medium-sized clients on the subject of business growth.

'We know what it's like to start a business and work through all the issues that arise,' said Fazio, previously an investor in a northern Wisconsin bank, who met his co-founders, Tom Hopp and Dave Borchardt, through an intermediary. 'Elm Grove was a perfect spot for our next branch. We already had clients in Waukesha County and our belief has always been that if we're going to do business in an area, then we need to have a physical presence there, too.'

To date, Joe continued, Commerce's Elm Grove branch has received over $9 million in deposits and issued $22 million in loans, contributing to the bank's 20 percent growth in both commercial lending and home mortgages.

'From day one, our motivation has been to be in business with our clients for the long haul, not just to provide them a good rate,' he said. 'We offer all the banking technologies available today, and even though we don't have ATMs, our clients can go to any ATM in the world and we will reimburse them up to $15 a month.

'Commerce is also very responsive. We give answers quickly, because we know how important time is to a business. Even if the answer on a loan is 'no,' we won't leave it at that. We'll tell you why and how to address the issue.'
